Description
The historical significance and hilly terrain of Fort Greene Park make it an enjoyable place to explore. Serving as the site of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 forts, the park was established in 1847 as the first park in Brooklyn – a milestone made possible through the efforts of Walt Whitman, then the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. By 1896, Calvert Vaux and Frederick Olmsted – the masterminds behind Central and Prospect Parks – were transforming the area into its current state. Today, it is a popular destination due to its tennis courts, ball fields and playground.
