Serving as the site of Revolutionary War and War of 1812 forts, the park was established in 1847 as the first park in Brooklyn – a milestone made possible through the efforts of Walt Whitman, then the editor of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. By 1896, Calvert Vaux and Frederick Olmsted – the masterminds behind Central and Prospect Parks – were transforming the area into its current state. Today, it is a popular destination due to its tennis courts, ball fields and playground.
