Description

Located on the southern edge of Manhattan, Governors Island provides visitors with an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. This 12-acre oasis boasts public artworks, winding pathways, and a variety of gardens, making it a beautiful destination for rest and relaxation. There are also many memorials located on the island, including Korean War memorials and a tribute to Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazzano. History buffs will appreciate the island's connections to Manhattan's early Dutch settlers, as its first settlement was established in 1625 and its first battery was built for its defense. Other attractions include the SeaGlass Carousel, the historic Castle Clinton, and a ferry service to Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.
